Embracing the Power of Pleasure as We Age
A Workshop With Dr. Jane Fleishman
Two-Day Online Workshop, Three Hours Per Day | 6 AASECT CEs Available
This workshop is designed as additional training for counseling professionals and educators working within the sexuality field. CIIS is an organizational provider for AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists). This course is aligned with AASECT’s core knowledge areas and is approved for sex therapy certification.
New sexual scripts are emerging for older adults, yet so many common myths continue to prevail and keep older adults from experiencing the joys, discoveries, and pleasures available to them at a later age.
Join Sexuality Educator Dr. Jane Fleishman for an interactive workshop exploring sexuality as we age and how to move from a lens of loss to the power of pleasure. Dr. Fleishman examines the cultural narratives of sexuality as we age, illuminates the multidimensionality of aging sexually, and provides an update on the most current research. Workshop participants are provided with opportunities for a multi-modal approach involving short presentations, small group discussions, clinical case studies, reflection, guided meditation, and short demonstrations.
This workshop embraces a multidimensional perspective on aging, including racial and cultural differences, gender identities, sexual orientations, kinkiness, disabilities, and relationship structures. Though we are each different regarding each of these dimensions, the one dimension that all participants share (if we are so fortunate) is that of aging and the manifestations of ageism across all boundaries.
For this reason, this workshop is not only for clinicians and educators, but for anyone interested in personal and human growth. Healthcare professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in ways beneficial to clients or patients.
Jane Fleishman, PhD, MEd, MS, is a writer, award-winning educator, sexuality researcher, and AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator. She earned her M.Ed. and Ph.D. at Widener University Center for Human Sexuality Studies. She is on a mission to promote sexual wellness in older adults and doesn’t shy away from the difficult and complex realities of making that happen. She focuses on the contradictions around ageism, sexism, racism, ableism, and other ways that people get placed on the margins. Her curious nature led to her latest accomplishment, The Stonewall Generation: LGBTQ Elders on Sex, Activism, and Aging which recently won a coveted Nautilus Book Award. She co-hosts an award-winning podcast on sex about sex in the second half of life, Our Better Half. And she recently completed a popular TEDx talk with over 90,000 views, “Is It OK for Grandma to Have Sex?” In 2000, Jane received Governor’s Service Award in Healing of Racism; in 2015, a Graduate Scholar Award from the Aging and Society Knowledge Community; and in 2016, the William R. Stayton Award for Leadership in the field of human sexuality. She is the proud mother of two really fabulous young people and lives in Northampton, MA with her partner.
