The current clinical approach to mental health is steeped in colonialism. There is a global mental health crisis, but the dominant Eurocentric lens that guides therapeutic practice fails to tell a complete and accurate story of why people are sick and how to get well, making it unable to lead to true healing and liberation for all people.

Clinicians, mental health professionals, and healers can either continue to speak only of the impact of childhood trauma—important, but incomplete—or choose to get to the root of the problem: separation from land, our ancestry, community, and our innate joy. Healing and our ancestors' experiences are deeply tied together. The world needs therapeutic healers who commit to an ongoing process of emotional decolonization and who are prepared to help the world dig deep and access true liberation, healing, and joy.

Join Dr. Jennifer Mullan, the visionary psychologist and founder of Decolonizing Therapy, for an immersive workshop designed for clinicians, mental health professionals, therapists, psychologists, healers, helpers, space holders, and anyone interested in exploring her approach to politicizing therapeutic practice and investigating the colonial soul wound as an approach to therapy and healing.

In this experiential workshop, participants unpack how the psychological roots of colonization are embedded in our bodies and minds. Dr. Mullan invites a shift in perspective and a shift in how we “do therapy.” Instead, she shares how to look at how we “undo the colonial grip on our minds, bodies, spirits and relationships.”

Dr. Mullan particularly focuses on key chapters of her book, Decolonizing Therapy and explores themes such as the colonial roots of therapy, therapy being deeply Eurocentric and colonial; the colonial soul wound, and the privilege of safety; expressions of colonization in people and practices. She examines sacred rage and disenfranchised grief and the path from historical trauma to collective healing.

Through guided meditations, personal reflections, and narrative therapeutic techniques, participants will gain practical skills for addressing intergenerational trauma and reclaiming ancestral healing practices.

Attendees can expect to leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of how to integrate decolonial principles into their therapeutic practices or personal healing journeys, foster community-based healing, and support others with colonized histories- and work on reclamation of health and releasing of shame if you are living with ancestral colonizing histories.

This workshop will be an experience that invites participants IN, and invites personal reflection, empowering participants to create healthier, less violent and more accessible care practices and communities.

Teachings are appropriate for healthcare professionals as well as the general public. Healthcare professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in ways beneficial to clients or patients.
