Learning from Community at CIIS’ Spring Open House

At each CIIS Open House event, a community panel of faculty and alumni discusses what drew them to CIIS and their experiences at the University.

February 10, 2025

CIIS’ hybrid Spring Open House on Saturday, February 22 will include a rich program of offerings that introduce prospective students to the many programs and possibilities offered by a CIIS education. Each Open House event includes a community panel of faculty and alumni discussing their teaching and studies in response to the University’s annual theme. This video from the livestream of Spring Open House 2024 offers a preview of how generative and informative these conversations can be.

Facilitated by Ishan McCarthy, one of CIIS’ admissions counselors, the spring panel included faculty members Dr. Jeanine Canty and Kini Chang in conversation with alumni. Together the panelists discussed the dreams that led them to CIIS, and how their time here has helped to achieve them.

Talia Molé, a Ph.D. graduate from Anthropology and Social Change shared: “One thing that I appreciate so much from my time at CIIS is that as soon as I entered my work in the department, I automatically entered a huge community outside of the university…Our department invites the thinkers that we are studying. A lot of the thinkers that we're studying are current, they're alive. And I feel that that's something that you don't get into a lot of universities.”

Kini Chang, Chair of the M.A. in Counseling Psychology concentration in Community Mental Health, offered that what defines CIIS for her is “partnership and community and compassion,” and spoke about how it is a particularly welcoming place for returning and nontraditional students:

Sometimes especially we come back into higher education later on in our life, or you're changing careers or you're in this exploratory process that can be so anxiety provoking and scary for you. And I just want to remind you that you're not alone and we're here for you.

See what insights and encouragement this year’s panelists will share by registering for Spring Open House on February 22. The upcoming panel will consider how they connect with curiosity through their scholarship and practices, and will include faculty members as well as alumni and current students.

As a thank you for registering for Open House, attendees who decide to apply will have their application fees waived.
