Integral Counseling Psychology Adds Innovative Hybrid Program

The Integral Counseling Psychology concentration now offers an online-focused hybrid format of its M.A. in Counseling Psychology.

April 21, 2025

Since 2020, the field of telehealth within psychotherapy has grown exponentially, creating new opportunities for increased reach, ease of patient access, and innovation in practice. Here at CIIS, the renowned Integral Counseling Psychology program is meeting these developments by expanding its offerings to include a hybrid program that is primarily taught online, with an on-campus intensive each semester to build community and practice skills in person.

In addition to adding capacity alongside the high-demand weekday and weekend on-campus programs, this new offering seeks to lead the field of telehealth training and combine Integral Counseling Psychology’s over-50-year legacy with CIIS’ three-decade history of innovation and excellence in online education. Students will engage with professors and classmates through immersive, experiential coursework with the convenience and flexibility offered by a primarily online education, and conclude their degrees with a year-long supervised training practicum.

We are thrilled to add a hybrid option to our storied Integral Counseling Program and are committed to offering students the same first-rate, integrally-focused and transformational learning experience that has been our standard for over 50 years. Join us in this exciting new venture!

The curriculum maintains CIIS' institutional values honoring the multidimensional nature of the person in society and expands their reach to new communities of students beyond the San Francisco Bay Area. “We are thrilled to add a hybrid option to our storied Integral Counseling Program,” said Program Chair Nick Bustos, Ph.D., LMFT, “and are committed to offering students the same first-rate, integrally-focused and transformational learning experience that has been our standard for over 50 years. Join us in this exciting new venture!”

Applications for the hybrid M.A. program open in August of this year and classes begin in Spring 2026.

Three Program Formats

Each program within the department is designed to create access to an integral counseling education for specific student groups, to fit the schedules of working adults, and to accommodate different learning styles.

Students in the original Integral Counseling Psychology program typically reside in the greater Bay Area, and have the flexibility in their work or life schedule to attend classes Monday through Friday. Students in this program benefit from the regular pacing of weekly classes and in-person instruction and discussion.

The weekday program meets the California Board of Behavioral Science (BBS) requirements for both the LMFT and LPCC licenses.

Students often reside in the greater Bay Area, (though there are students who live in Nevada, Oregon, and other parts of California), and may have a full-time job or related life commitments that complicate Monday-Friday attendance. Students in the weekend program benefit from a schedule that concentrates courses to one Friday-Sunday long weekend per month, in addition to face-to-face instruction.

The weekend program meets the California Board of Behavioral Science (BBS) requirements for both the LMFT and LPCC licenses.

The new hybrid program offers the flexibility of primarily online coursework, as well as the opportunity to train in a format specifically geared to online practice. Students do not need to live in or attend regular classes in San Francisco, but are required to attend an in-person intensive on campus each semester.

The hybrid program meets the requirements for the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) LPCC license, as well as those of Oregon, Washington, and Nevada.
