Event Description

Self-rejection is a survival strategy in which we maintain childhood attachments to abusive attachment figures by disowning ourselves as bad or unlovable. This deeply painful failure of self-acceptance is adaptive in an unsafe world but results in lifelong shame and self-loathing, difficulty self-soothing, identity confusion, and complications in relationships with others.

International trauma expert and clinical psychologist Janina Fisher developed the Fragmented Selves approach, or Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST), to help people overcome this alienation from self. It focuses on cultivating mindful awareness of disowned selves and disowned experience. As individuals learn to relate to their overwhelming emotions, body sensations, and impulses as evidence of trauma-related parts, they develop an increased ability to observe rather than react and tolerate distressing responses rather than acting out to discharge tension.

Join Janina for an in-depth, interactive workshop on healing trauma through her trauma-informed approach. Using strategies inspired by Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems, and ego state therapies, Janina empowers participants to explore the therapeutic power of fostering earned secure attachment relationships to our most deeply disowned selves.

In this workshop, Janina guides participants to a deeper understanding of the relationship between attachment trauma and self-alienation. Discover the benefits of mindful observations of parts of the self, and indicators of trauma-related parts and their internal conflicts. Understand how to identify parts that sabotage self-compassion and self-acceptance and learn the four signs of self-alienation.

Teachings are appropriate for healthcare professionals as well as the general public. Healthcare professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in ways beneficial to clients or patients.

Janina Fisher, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and a former instructor at Harvard Medical School. An international expert on the treatment of trauma, she is an Advisory Board member of the Trauma Research Foundation and the author of Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming Self-Alienation (2017), Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma: a Workbook for Survivors and Therapists (2021), and The Living Legacy Instructional Flip Chart (2022). She is best known for her work on integrating mindfulness-based and somatic interventions into traditional talk therapies. More information can be found on her website.
