For those of us serving trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TGD) communities, it can be tough to stay curious and compassionate when we are not as helpful as we would like to be, especially in moments when we unintentionally harm. When we mess up, guilt is a natural response. However, shame is usually activated when mistakes tap into something deeper about how we see ourselves or imagine others see us. The potential for harm increases significantly when we are caught up in shame, and not just for our clients, because shame has an insidious impact on our own presence and connection in our work.
With a radically affirmative lens of liberation psychology and our own curiosity and willingness to heal—especially during moments of shame—we can expand our own presence and connection with others.
Join genderqueer psychologist and facilitator Dr. addyson tucker for an experiential workshop examining the way shame shows up in ourselves as clinicians, as well as with TGD clients. After a brief overview of liberation-centered and anti-oppressive frameworks, participants reflect on external shame messages of being too much or not enough. Dr. tucker offers considerations for when those messages become internalized for providers as well as for their clients.
Through an adapted model of radical healing and shame resilience, participants can expand their capacity to hold what’s difficult within themselves and in their TGD work. In this workshop, Dr. tucker reflects on possibilities to stay more present during moments when shame seeks to disconnect. By remaining curious and compassionate with ourselves, we can also invite our clients to do the same. This honors TGD experiences of systemic and sociocultural oppression, while also allowing space for greater embodiment and joy.
This workshop is appropriate for anyone working with trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse communities.
Teachings are appropriate for healthcare professionals as well as the general public. Healthcare professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in ways beneficial to clients or patients.

- Discuss 1+ example of how shame with a TGD client might feed into one or more of the features of white supremacy.
- Plan at least 1 intervention for TGD liberation that might be applied from the tenants of radical healing (collectivism; critical consciousness; radical hope; strength and resistance; & cultural authenticity and self-knowledge).
- Utilize curiosity and compassion to support the development of shame resilience.
- Compare self-compassionate ‘holding the hard’ from other attempts to manage (e.g., forced self-care, false self-esteem).
