A Guest Lecture on a Sacred Journey in Arid Landscapes 

Please join the Ecology, Spirituality, and Religion program on Wednesday October 9, 2024 for an enriching 1.5-hour online conversation featuring Brother Gary Paul Nabhan, Ph.D. This event will delve into the rich theme of Desert Spirituality, examining how the unique ecology of arid landscapes shapes our spiritual practices and cultural frameworks. Following a 45-minute structured talk, there will be an interactive Q&A session, allowing participants to engage directly with Gary to further explore the insights he shares.

Brother Gary Paul Nabhan

Brother Gary Paul Nabhan is an Agricultural Ecologist, Ethnobotanist, Ecumenical Franciscan Brother, and author whose work has focused primarily on the interaction of biodiversity and cultural diversity of the arid binational Southwest. He serves as Professor Emeritus and the Kellogg Endowed Chair in Southwestern Borderlands Food and Water Security at the University of Arizona. He has visited monasteries in contemplative desert spiritual traditions in 6 countries and is a graduate of Richard Rohr's two-year program at the Living School with the Center for Action and Contemplation in New Mexico. 

 


This month, Gary is releasing two new books:

  • Against the American Grain: A Borderlands History of Resistance
  • Chile, Clove, and Cardamom: A Gastronomic Journey into the Fragrances and Flavors of Desert Cuisines

His book Agave Spirits: The Past, Present, and Future of Mezcals won a 2024 James Beard Media Award.
