The brocaded thangkas (Tibetan scroll paintings) in this collection were primarily painted by the Tamang artist Chewang Dorje Lama, whose studio overlooks the Great Stupa of Boudhnath in Kathmandu, Nepal. Chewang has studied Tibetan thangka painting for the past 20 years and mainly produces thangkas for Nyingma and Kagyu monasteries. He specializes in painting "black thangkas" of the wrathful and protective deities of Vajrayana Buddhism. The curator for this exhibit, Siddhartha V. Shah, studied history of art and classics at Johns Hopkins University, focusing on the representation of gods and goddesses in ancient art and mythology. Shah holds a master's degree from California Institute of Integral Studies in East-West Psychology. Having spent much of his life in India and Europe and raised in the Hindu tradition, he brings a fresh interpretation of Eastern traditions and culture that can be understood and integrated in the West. Shah specializes in sacred art under the mentorship of Robert Beer, renowned painter and scholar.
