The School of Consciousness and Transformation
conducts scholarly and interdisciplinary
inquiry in the fields of philosophy, psychology,
religion, anthropology, health, leadership,
women's spirituality, and transformative
learning and social change. This integrative,
multidimensional mode of inquiry appreciates
and challenges received traditions. It enriches
these traditions by infusing them with perspectives
taken from feminist theory, ecological thought,
consciousness studies, critical social theory,
integrative learning, creative social change,
and new conceptual paradigms. The school
serves to revive the spirit and wisdom contained
in the world; to support personal growth
and development; and to promote social action
inspired by current studies in the humanities
and the natural and social sciences.
The School of Consciousness and Transformation
continues the task begun 30 years ago by
a group of distinguished thinkers who founded
the Institute on an integral East-West vision.
This vision still inspires the school today,
and is embodied in all of its programs.
Each program respects the spiritual dimension
of experience, incorporates different ways
of knowing, and exposes students to a variety
of worldviews.
Course offerings combine in-depth scholarly
research and teaching with a uniqueness
of approach and a diversity of content not
often found in academic settings. The internationally
known core faculty is supported by a remarkable
group of distinguished visiting and adjunct
faculty. Students participate in a wide
range of learning environments, including
collaborative cohorts, participatory fieldwork
in various communities, spiritual journeys
and retreats, weekend seminars, and online
courses.
Graduates of the School of Consciousness
and Transformation have a history of accomplishment
in many fields, including academia, health
care, and healing, and pursue work in the
nonprofit and private sectors as well. The
benefits of a CIIS education go beyond one's
career: graduates also learn to embrace
a new and more integral approach to lifeone
that encompasses spirituality, creativity,
critical thinking, and multiple ways of
knowing.
