About the Program

The primary objective of the Psy.D. program is to produce competent, well-rounded psychologists whose practice of professional psychology is rooted in a depth of self-knowledge, a breadth of worldviews, and an abiding commitment to honoring and exploring the diverse dimensions of human experience. The program is accredited by the American Psychological Association. The program utilizes the practitioner-scholar training model in accordance with contemporary standards of graduate education and training in professional psychology. It provides students with a solid foundation in clinical training and research methods, while emphasizing an understanding of consciousness, inner development, and cultural diversity.

Students entering the Psy.D. program with a B.A. or B.S. degree will embark upon a four-to-five-year program leading to the doctorate with a specialization in Clinical Psychology. A limited number of students with an M.A. or M.S. degree may be admitted to the program with advanced standing. (For details, see "Advanced Standing/Transferring Units," under Admission.) Graduates of the program will have completed all education and training requirements necessary for licensure as a psychologist in California and in most other states.

Consistent with the CIIS mission, the Psy.D. program seeks to infuse graduate work in clinical psychology with an East-West multicultural emphasis. This unique aspect of the program translates into three specific objectives: relevance, diversity, and depth. In keeping with both Eastern and Western spiritual traditions, the program strives for relevance by ensuring that its training and activities address important human issues. The program accomplishes this aim through the substance and approach of its coursework, clinical supervision, and colloquia. It also achieves relevance by requiring that students complete at least 30 hours of work on personal growth through projects such as community service, specific psychospiritual practices, or other experiences that promote personal development.

The Psychology Doctoral program strives for diversity by actively working to ensure that its constituency reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of the Bay Area community. And, finally, the program seeks depth through its commitment to pursue—in all their complexity—enduring questions about the contemporary human condition.
