Asian and Comparative Studies M.A. and Ph.D.

Alumni at Work

Graduates of the Asian and Comparative Studies program possess a rare combination of skills—in research, language and translation, cross-cultural communication, and teaching—that are applicable to a broad range of professions. While some pursue a spiritual path, others obtain the academic credentials needed to secure teaching positions. Many students pursue careers in counseling, organizational consulting, social services, or political activism. Among the alumni are:

Fu-Ping Chang (Sister Zunai), Ph.D., 2002, serves as an adjunct faculty member in the East Asian Studies Department at the University of California at Berkeley.

Kartikeya Patel, Ph.D., 1998, is the dean of the Global Program at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. He is the author of a number of publications. Dr. Patel's recent articles have appeared in Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy; Asian Philosophy; and Indian Philosophical Quarterly.

Murshida Rabia Ana Perez-Chisti, Ph.D., 1999, is a faculty member at the University of Creation Spirituality/Naropa Institute in Oakland, California. She is a Sufi Movement International lineage holder and has a private counseling practice in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Taigen Daniel Leighton, M.A., 1989, is a Zen Buddhist priest, professor of world religions, a facilitator of Christian-Buddhist dialogue groups, and the author of several books, including Bodhisattva Archetypes.
