In addition to the standard application
form, applicants to both the M.A. and Ph.D. programs
in Asian and Comparative Studies are required
to submit the following:
Academic transcripts Professional and academic goal statement Writing sample: an outstanding essay or article will suffice. Autobiography
Master's Degree Application Requirements
For the master's program, CIIS gives strong preference to those with a bachelor's degree in philosophy or religion. Applicants with a bachelor's degree in the humanities or social sciences, or with science or professional degrees, are also encouraged to apply. The Admissions Committee welcomes information regarding a student's involvement in the practice of any of the traditions offered for study as evidence of practical involvement in the field.
Doctoral Degree Application Requirements
Applicants to the doctoral program must have a master's degree or equivalent in either philosophy or religion. They must also have taken the equivalent of at least five basic core courses in Hinduism, Chinese Studies, or Buddhism. If an applicant has not fulfilled this requirement, he or she will be required to complete additional units at CIIS. Doctoral applicants must also submit two letters of recommendation with their application materials.
